Does your skin go nutso when you apply certain products? Do you sunburn easily? Does your skin feel very thin and fine? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, you probably have sensitive skin — and it can be a little tricky finding products to help care for it!
I’ve suffered from sensitive skin for years, and it seemed like I was never going to figure out how to properly care for it. Luckily, I’ve figured out a few tips and tricks to remember before putting anything — and I mean anything – on my face.
If you’re confused about how to take care of your sensitive skin, these tips are a must!
If you’ve already bought a product you really want to try, the best way to determine whether your skin will freak out is to do a patch test first. Take a small amount of product and apply it to a small, inconspicuous area of your face (I like to try on my jawline or the back of my neck.) This test should be used for every product you buy (makeup, creams, lotions, sunscreen, etc.).
While normally I would recommend waiting a full 24 hours to determine if your skin will have a reaction, most reactions will occur pretty quickly after applying the product. If you notice any sign of a reaction at all, discontinue use of that product and find another one that will work on sensitive skin.
2. Avoid Certain Ingredients
While I always look for products that claim “works for sensitive skin,” I also look at the ingredient list of every product I buy, even if they tell me it will work. You know why? There are certain ingredients found in a lot of beauty products that are known to cause reactions in people with sensitive skin.
When shopping for beauty products, avoid anything that contains alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, or other drying agents that are too harsh for sensitive skin. Ideally, look for products that contain natural compounds, and only choose products that are made with plant-based waxes. Vitamins and minerals are also great for sensitive skin, such as vitamin B5.
3. Look for Certain Labels
While checking the ingredient list on products is important, you can help quicken your search by only reviewing products with certain labels. Look for beauty products that are non-comedogenic (meaning they won’t clog pores), as well as products that are both fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Fragrance of any kind can wreak havoc on sensitive skin!
4. Wear Sunscreen
Protecting your skin from the elements is very important to maintaining its health and vitality. Look for sunscreens that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin, and wear it every day — even if there’s no sign of sun.
Ultraviolet light can still shine through on even the cloudiest days, so you want to ensure you are protected. Taking care of sensitive skin can be a difficult task, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. These tips will help you choose makeup and other beauty products that won’t wreak havoc on your sensitive skin and help you look glowing, vibrant and beautiful no matter what.
