My closet used to be full of every piece of clothing I’d ever purchased in a five-year time frame. Taking clothes off a hanger was a tedious task that involved wedging an arm into the mass of fabric and wiggling the piece I needed until I somehow freed the hanger from the rack.
I finally felt bad about the husband’s tiny stamp of real estate in the closet and decided to get rid of clothes I can no longer fit in or have not worn in six months. It was a liberating act and I only wish I had done it sooner.
Now the closet is sparse on my end, containing only a few essentials I cannot go day to day without.
It took me years to find jeans that fit my odd-shaped body. It seems like most jeans these days are made for girls who are size zeroes and have legs longer than a giraffe’s. Then I discovered tailors, and my days of jean envy disappeared. A perfect-fitting jean is a vital part of your wardrobe arsenal.
Take the time to try on a variety of jean styles. If you find a style you like, but it still doesn’t fit just right, drive on over to a tailor (ask around for recommendations) and have them tailor these jeans as if they were made just for you. White Cotton Shirt
This shirt goes with everything, and I mean everything: jeans, a slim skirt, dress pants. You can tuck it in, leave it hanging out or wear it over a colorful camisole and tie it at the end. The white cotton shirt is a versatile piece and will expand your wardrobe options. Shirt pictured: Stretch Fitted Shirt, The Gap, $39.50.
No closet is complete without a basic black dress. No need for flashy rhinestones or distracting patterns; the little black dress is dramatic on its own. Pair with beautiful earrings or with a delicate bracelet. Dress pictured: One-shoulder Hammered Satin Dress, Ann Taylor, $109.99 (on sale)
Shoes can make or break any outfit. Don’t take any chances with shoes you’re unsure of. When in doubt, go with black pumps. Wear them during the day. Wear them during the night. These shoes will highlight your outfit. Shoes pictured: Jessica Simpson Josette Pump, Piperlime, $79.
Flats provide a casual twist for jeans and dresses. They add sophistication to your ensemble. Add a pop of color and be on your way. Flats pictured: Jessica Simpson Belina, Piperlime, $69.
Weekends are for relaxing, and your feet need a break. Sneakers are for running errands, going to the park, running after your three-year old. Sneakers pictured: Converse by John Varvatos Eyelets Sneaker, Nordstrom, $55.90 (on sale)
You need something to tote your everyday essentials in. Whether it’s sippy cups and snacks or a make-up bag and books, tote bags allow you to carry almost anything. Tote bag pictured: Melie Bianco Tote bag in Distressed Tan, eFashionhouse, $64.
Go clean your closet and get back to basics!
